| Brief Introduction of the Law School |

Located in the ancient city of Xi’an, Northwest University is founded in 1902. It is now one of the key institutions of the national “211 Project of Higher Education” and “One Province One Institution Project”, which is co-founded by the Ministry of Education and Shaanxi Province.
Law School of Northwest University is one of the law institutions which enjoy the longest history of Chinese contemporary law education. Its former institution is Shaanxi Law School which is founded in 1907. After the adjusting of the high institution in 1953, the law department of Northwest University is one the four key law departments that remained. In 1958, the whole faculty and all the students in the law department officially moved to the Northwest University of Politics and Law being organized. In 1986, the law department of Northwest University was fully reorganized. In July, 2002, law School of Northwest University officially set up. Until today, law School of Northwest University has developed into one the large-scaled and influential law institutions in West China.
Law School of Northwest University is consisted of many educational and search organization such as the law department, the education center of LL.M., National Intellectual Property Rights Training and Protection Center, economic law research center and international economic law research institute, etc. Its auxiliary bodies are Shaanxi simulation center of law, Moot court, and library and documentation room. The department now owns the senior subject designated by the LL.M Degree, together with three Master’s Degree designation sites on Economic Law, Civil and Commercial law, and International Law, among which the Economic Law has been awarded as the “provincial level excellent course.” Based on the current influence and strength of law School of Northwest University, in November, 2005, the first school of Intellectual Property Rights in West China was founded and the offices were merged with those of the law department.
Law School of Northwest University possesses a strong teaching faculty and a sound operation system. It currently has 58 instructors, among which there are 28 professors and associate professors, and over 40 part-time professors. Over 20 teachers work as present, vice president, executive director or director of the national research institution. Over ten teachers work as professional councilors in the Provincial or Municipal court and procuratorate.
In the recent 5 years, the teaching and research faculties in Law School of Northwest University have been leading 173 research projects, among which there are 68 international, national and provincial projects. 50 academic works and textbooks like Financial Law, Zhang Jiashan Simplified Chinese Law Research, Outline of Chinese Law Philosophy History, Jurisprudence-Research on the Relationship between Law and Society Development, the Main Subject of Economy and its Right, Contract Law, Principle of Private International Law, International Trade Law, etc., have been published. 26 dissertations have been published in the national authoritative newspapers like China Legal Science, GuangMing Daily, Soft Science of China, etc, and more than 200 academic dissertations are published in many leading periodicals. More than 80 researches have been awarded the second and third prize by Shaanxi Provincial Government in the fifth, sixth and seventh Philosophy and Social Science Conference. Furthermore, the faculties have participated in the legislation, management of State affairs and over 300 law drafting process, which make great contribution to the national legislation and especially for the local legislation.
Currently there are nearly 1000 students in the law School of Northwest University. It has cultivated over 3000 law professionals and talents, some of whom went to further study in Peking University, Tsinghua University, Renmin University, etc, while some others were sent to Harvard University, Illinois University, University of Wales, etc to pursue further studies.
The Law School of Northwest University always attaches great importance to the international academic communication and cooperation. It has sent teachers to international academic conferences over 30 times and national academic conferences more then 200 times. Famous law experts like Liang Huixing, Chen Guangzhong, Shen Sibao, Wu Handong, etc have been invited here to give lectures. Meanwhile, Ten law experts from the U.S, German, UK, Japan, and Singapore are also invited to instruct courses on campus. Foreign Jury groups are invited to take part in the moot trials. Currently it has maintained profound friendship with over 20 famous universities from the U.S, German, UK, Japan, Singapore, Span, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, etc.
The rapidly developing law school of Northwest University is now playing an increasingly important role in promoting the economic and social development of Shaanxi Province and even Western China. |
